MASTERCARD TO USE SELFIE FOR BIOMETRIC AUTHENTICATION

MasterCard Friday has announced at the ongoing TECH+ Conferences and Expo in Lagos that it is developing selfie technology for biometric authentication for online payments to eliminate fraud. Omoke Ojomuyidele, business head of Mastercard told attendees at the well-attended TECH+ that the innovation will contribute to boosting cashless initiative in Nigeria. “MasterCard says that to use the upcoming function, customers will be required to download the MasterCard app on their phones and once an online purchase is at the checkout stage, the app will push through a request asking authorisation before payment is submitted.” According to her, MasterCard reckons that we are today in a world where the new generation of selfie-takers now account for over 93 million people across the globe that take selfie on their Android phones on a daily basis. By statistics cited by MasterCard, the tech payment giant wants to use the innovation to provide what people do to take them where they want, she adds. “Mastercard will launch a pilotprogramme with 500 participants over the next few months to develop infrastructure to prove purchase without the need to enter password”, Ojomuyidele told the TECH+ audience. According to the MasterCard exec, “the world is changing to a point where there is a global shift to electronic and the cloud is maturing everyday thereby making the line between physical and digital commerce blur by the day.” MasterCard says that to use the upcoming function, customers will be required to download the MasterCard app on their phones and once an online purchase is at the checkout stage, the app will push through a request asking authorisation before payment is submitted. MasterCard says that over 12 billion devices across the world today are connected to the Internet and by 2020, it is expected to reach 50 billion. Essentially, we will be living in a world where anything connected to the Internet can carry out transactions. “We need to start innovating so that when we get to the future where everything is connected to the Internet, so we don’t have a problem”,Ojomuyidele adds. However, she urged enterpreneurs to come up with innovative ideas to make them remain in their business space else they go into extinction “within the twinkling of an eye.”

The men of the Nigerian military are to take over the security of the nation’s oil pipelines. The Acting Director, Defence Information, Col. Rabe Abubakar, who said in a statement on Tuesday, added that the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Emmanuel Kachikwu, met with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, on how to work out modalities to get the military to protect the strategic national assets. He quoted the NNPC’s GMD as having said that he visited the CDS as a follow up to a proposal the corporation presented to President Muhammadu Buhari, to have the Army Corps of Engineering to maintain and secure the nation’s pipelines. Abubakar also quoted the NNPC’s GMD as having said that the corporation was taking a holistic step to ensure that the best hands were used to protect the pipelines. He said that the NNPC was also engaging the services of the Navy and the Air Force in collaborative efforts to secure the nation’s pipelines and to prevent the theft of the country’s oil. Abubakar said that Kachikwu solicited for the support of the CDS in the fight against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and other maritime crime. He was said to have told the CDS that the NLC was making moves to procure more boats for the Navy for patrol operations and trackers for the monitoring of vessels coming into the country. Kachikwu was also quoted as saying that the NNPC had also reached out to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, on the issue. “We are trying to equip the Navy a lot more with boats for patrols; we are trying to get trackers and central system to be able to monitor every vessel that comes in and out of the country. “We have equally spoken with the Chief of Air Staff on other effective ways of collaboration,” he was quoted as having said. The NNPC’s GMD was said to have told the CDS that the country was losing 250,000 barrels of crude oil per day which was one-fifth of the total production in the country. Kachikwu, who called for more efforts to address the incident of crude of theft, said that the ugly trend had reduced since he became the GMD of the NNPC.

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has refused to hang the official portrait of President Muhammadu Buhari at the party’s national secretariat, checks by The PUNCH have revealed. Over 100 days after the President assumed office, the PDP has yet to hang his portrait at any of the offices in its Wadata House national secretariat, located at Zone 5, Abuja. The party has also said it would never put Buhari’s portraits on its walls though it has removed that of the former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who ruled on the platform of the PDP. “We will never hang his portrait in this office, because President Buhari is not known to our party. He is not a leader of our party and therefore we will never put his portrait here. We are a political party, very partisan and therefore, we are not going to hide that,” National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, told our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday. Jonathan was also the presidential candidate of the former ruling party during the last general election but he was defeated by Buhari, who was the presidential candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress. The defeat was the first to be suffered by the PDP since the return of democracy in 1999. Before now, the party has always been hanging the portraits of all the Presidents at the party’s reception area as well as the National Executive Committee and National Working Committee halls within the secretariat. Metuh said the APC also did not hang the portrait of Jonthan in its offices before the former President was defeated in the March 28 election. “Can you find out if the APC had the portrait of former President Jonathan in their office before he was defeated? That is just it,” he told our correspondent. When asked whether the party was taking its own pound of flesh, Metuh said no but that since Buhari “is not a member of our party, we won’t put his portrait here.” The APC National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Lai Mohammed, expressed shock at Metuh’s comment. “This is ridiculous and we have no comment. Let Nigerians judge the PDP on this matter,” Mohammed said. He said the PDP spokesman had a shallow understanding of the concept of opposition politics. Meanwhile, work has stopped at the new secretariat of the PDP, located in the Central Business District, Abuja. Investigations by our correspondent indicated that contractors handling the project were only doing skeletal jobs at the site. When our correspondent visited the site on Tuesday, there was no visible job being done at the site. It was gathered that the cost of the project was put at N11.5bn when it was awarded some years ago. At completion, the building is expected to have 12 floors, with two other floors serving as the car park. The party had claimed that the project was being financed from levies and contributions from members. When a fund-raising dinner was organised a few years ago, the party was able to realise about N5bn, and the project, which started more than four years ago, was to be delivered in 126 weeks. The former National Chairman of the party, under whose leadership the project commenced, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, had then said that the complex, when completed, would strengthen the capacity of the PDP to discharge its role effectively in Africa. The party had claimed on January 5, 2015 that it was going to spend part of the N21.8bn it realised from the party’s fund-raising on the party’s secretariat. A former Minister for Information and the Chairman of the party’s Fund-raising Committee, Prof. Jerry Gana, had said the money donated to the PDP was not meant for the campaign of the defeated Jonathan alone.

The troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted some suspected members of the Boko Haram sect believed to be suppliers of hard drugs and other stimulants to the deadly sect. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Tuesday that the suspects were arrested at Depchi and Geidam in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State. He said that the arrested terrorists were also involved in the supply of fuel aside from the hard drugs in their possession. Usman listed the drugs to include cannabis, chlorophone substance known as Madaran suck and die, trampoline and others . “Following Army Headquarters directive to troops in the North-East for a painstaking search of motorists and cargoes, troops of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army have intercepted and arrested some kingpins and foot soldiers of suppliers of Boko Haram terrorists with hard drugs and other stimulants between Depchi and Geidam, Geidam Local Government Area in northern part of Yobe State today,” the statement read in part. He recalled that most of the Boko Haram members captured by the troops could not read the Holy Quran. Usman added that some of them could not even recite the first chapter of the Quran in spite of their claim that they had a desire to establish an Islamic state. He said that troops carrying out raids on the hideouts of the insurgents had not found the Quran or other Islamic books with the insurgents. The Acting Army spokesman said that the troops had only found “ammunition, local charms, condoms and all sort of drugs including sex enhancing ones in their enclave.” Usman, who said that those arrested had made statements, promised that the Army would continue to work towards ensuring the security of the country. “The Nigerian Army would continue to do its best in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in our country in order to make Nigeria safe and secure. “This however, requires continuous support and cooperation of the public. We always welcome and appreciate information that could lead to the arrest and pre-empting the Boko Haram terrorists and other criminal elements in the society,” he added.
